Famagusta — Gazimağusa, or simply Mağusa, in Turkish — is the historic walled city on North Cyprus's east coast, home to the Lala Mustafa Paşa Mosque (formerly St. Nicholas Cathedral), Othello Castle, the fenced-off district of Varosha (Maraş) and, just north of the city, the ruins of ancient Salamis. How long is the drive from Famagusta to the Karpaz peninsula?+
Allow around an hour and a half from Famagusta to the Apostolos Andreas Monastery near the tip of the Karpaz. Plan a full day if you want to stop at Golden Beach (Altın Kumsal) on the way.
How far is Famagusta from Ercan Airport?+
About an hour via Lefkoşa, depending on traffic. Leave plenty of time before an international departure.
Can I visit Varosha (Maraş)?+
Parts of Varosha have been open to visitors on foot or by bicycle since 2020. Driving inside the fenced area is not allowed, so park outside the entrance.
Can I take the car to the south of Cyprus?+
No. Our cars must stay in North Cyprus — the insurance does not cover the south.
