Family Car Rental and Travel Guide for North Cyprus

Why TRNC is a great family holiday destination

North Cyprus has quietly become one of the best family-holiday destinations in the eastern Mediterranean. The combination of safe, calm beaches, short flight times from the UK and Europe, English widely spoken, very low crime rates, family-orientated all-inclusive resorts and pricing roughly half what equivalent Mediterranean destinations cost makes TRNC genuinely competitive for parents looking for a hassle-free week. The major Long Beach resorts (Caesar, Noah's Ark, Kaya Artemis, Salamis Bay Conti) all run children's clubs, water-park facilities, animation programmes and high-chair-equipped restaurants. Outside the resort, the same family-friendly logic continues: Escape Beach has shallow water and lifeguards, Acapulco has a children's water park, Karpaz has wild donkeys and turtle-nesting sites, Salamis ancient ruins are an open-air history museum kids actually enjoy, and the Lefkoşa Selimiye Mosque is fascinating without being intimidating. The one piece that doesn't come pre-packaged is transport: TRNC has limited public transport, and most family-friendly destinations require a car. Below is a guide to renting and travelling with kids.

Choosing the right vehicle for a family of three to seven

TRNC car rental for families breaks down by passenger count. Two adults plus one child works fine in a Nissan March or Mazda Demio (5 seats, small boot). Two adults plus two children should consider a Nissan Note, Latio or Toyota Ractic (5 seats, slightly more boot space for a pushchair). Two adults plus three children, or a family with luggage and beach equipment, are best in a Nissan Wingroad or one of the larger compact options (5 seats with full boot capacity for a pushchair plus suitcases). For 6 or 7 passengers, the Toyota Sienta or Toyota Isis 7-seater minivans are the answer — three rows of seats, sliding side doors that simplify child loading and unloading, and enough boot for full-family luggage. The Nissan Serena hybrid is the largest in the Sur Car Hire fleet at 7 seats with cruise control, reverse camera and the largest boot — useful for groups of 6–7 with luggage planning longer drives. Air conditioning is standard on every SurCarHire vehicle, which matters in the July-August summer heat that can hit 38°C in the inland plain.

Top family destinations and what to expect with kids

Five family destinations stand out. First, Escape Beach near Kyrenia — shallow swimming, lifeguards, beach toys for hire and a beach club restaurant. Second, Acapulco Resort beach 15 minutes west of Kyrenia — water park slides, dedicated children's pool and dedicated children's animation. Third, the Salamis ancient city near Iskele — open-air ruins where children can run free, with the Roman amphitheatre and the gymnasium columns being the standouts; allow 2 hours and bring water. Fourth, the Karpaz wild donkeys — the herd of around 800 wild donkeys on the eastern peninsula will approach your car looking for food (which you should not give them, but they're harmless and amusing for kids). Fifth, the Bafra Long Beach water park at one of the resort hotels (day passes available) — full water-slide complex, wave pool and dedicated children's areas. Day-trip distances from a Long Beach base are: Escape Beach 75 minutes, Acapulco 80 minutes, Salamis 20 minutes, Karpaz 90 minutes for the donkey-spotting drive.

Practical tips: child seats, breaks, food, sun

Several practical things make family driving in TRNC much easier. First, child seats — required by law for under-3s and recommended for older small children. Sur Car Hire provides child seats on request at no extra charge — mention age and approximate weight in the booking note so we fit the right type. Second, journey breaks — TRNC roads are mostly good but the Karpaz day trip is a 4-hour total drive and the Lefkoşa-Karpaz transit is 90 minutes one way. Plan a stop every 60–90 minutes for kids; petrol stations along the main routes have toilets and snacks. Third, food in the car — pack water and snacks for any drive over an hour, especially in Karpaz where there are no food stops between Dipkarpaz and the tip. Fourth, sun and heat — July-August midday temperatures hit 38°C inland and the cars warm up rapidly when parked; never leave a child in a parked car for any duration. Fifth, walking distances — the historic centres of Famagusta and Lefkoşa involve 1–2 km of walking on uneven cobbles; bring a pushchair or carrier for under-4s.

Booking Sur Car Hire for a TRNC family holiday

Booking a Sur Car Hire car for a family TRNC holiday is the same three-step process as any other rental, with two extras worth flagging. First, book the right vehicle category for your group size — 6+ passengers means a Toyota Sienta, Toyota Isis or Nissan Serena, all available with hotel delivery. Second, mention child seats in the booking note: include age and approximate weight of each child so we fit infant carriers, toddler seats or booster cushions as required. Delivery to Ercan Airport, Long Beach hotels, Kyrenia hotels and Lefkoşa addresses is free. Payment is at handover in GBP cash or by card; no deposit required at booking. The Long Beach delivery to Caesar Resort, Noah's Ark, Kaya Artemis or any of the Bafra hotels is the simplest in our network — our main office is 5 minutes north of the strip in Bogaz. Sur Car Hire has been operating in TRNC since 1979 and our family ownership means we know the family-friendly hotels, the kid-friendly restaurants in Boğaz and the best routes for child-comfortable day trips.
