The Karpaz Peninsula

The Karpaz is the long, wild finger of land reaching north-east from İskele, and it is the highlight of any east-coast trip. The drive takes you past free-roaming wild donkeys to the Golden Beach (Altın Kum), one of the most beautiful and unspoilt stretches of sand in the Mediterranean, and on to the Apostolos Andreas Monastery at the very tip. It is a full day out — and impossible to do properly without a car.

Famagusta and Salamis

A short drive south brings you to Famagusta, whose Venetian walls enclose a remarkable old town of medieval churches and Ottoman monuments. Just outside the city lie the ruins of ancient Salamis, an extensive Roman and Byzantine site right by the sea. Together they make a rewarding half-day of history, easily combined with a beach stop on the way back.

Beaches close to home

You do not have to go far for a great beach. Long Beach and the Bafra resort sands are on your doorstep, while smaller coves along the coast reward anyone willing to drive a little.
